Worried sister asks for help in finding missing brother in Berlin

A worried sister who shares the same birthday as her older brother has asked for help in locating her only brother, who disappeared in Germany last week.

abrielle O’Brien (19) last spoke on the phone with her 26-year-old brother Shane at his hotel in Berlin where he was staying for work on Tuesday evening, October 5.

The web developer had lived and worked remotely in Munich for over a year but had traveled to Berlin, where his company is based, for a few days.

Shane, who grew up in Navan, County Meath, and whose family now lives in Kilcloon, was home for the last time this summer to share the birthday celebrations with his sister Gabrielle. They were both born on July 24, seven years apart.

Shane is extremely popular and well known for his involvement with the Navan Hockey Club over the years. He also played Gaelic football in Germany.

Gabrielle said her parents, Agnes and Jarlath, and all family members are “concerned but hopeful.”

“Shane had been living there in Munich as a web developer for almost two years and seemed very happy.

“I spoke to him by phone at his hotel Tuesday night and he was in great shape. There was nothing different about him.

“He left the hotel on Wednesday morning, a few days earlier, and that was the last time anyone saw or heard him from him.”

Gabrielle said her brother was not hard to miss and confirmed German police are investigating.

“He has red hair and is six feet four inches tall so he would stand out,” she said.

“We as a family hope he shows up, but obviously we are more and more worried with each passing day.

“If anyone can help find him, or can share his photo with someone he knows living in Germany, that would be a big help. We love him and we want him at home and we want just know he’s okay. “

The Foreign Ministry said it was aware of the case and was providing consular assistance.

An earlier call was shared widely across Germany by friends on social media.
