Suspected outbreak of the Delta Covid-19 variant in Athlone

The Department of Health is investigating a suspected outbreak of the Delta variant of Covid-19 in Athlone, County Westmeath.

The Delta variant, which was first identified in India, has yet to be officially confirmed in the city of the Midlands.

The HSE is advising people who were socializing in Athlone on June 11 and who may have been exposed to visit a Covid-19 testing center, which can be booked online.

An HSE statement said it was not yet clear how the transmission occurred, but the cases are linked to people socializing by the riverside on the west side on that date.

The statement said there were reports of house parties that took place that night, and social distancing advice may not have been followed.

He added, “The Delta variant is highly transmissible, and those who are not fully vaccinated may be at risk of infection. Those who are particularly vulnerable should continue to protect themselves against Covid-19 until they have been fully immunized. “

“If you have symptoms, please contact your GP, do not go to work, restrict your movements and arrange for a Covid-19 test. Symptoms of Covid-19 can be as mild as a runny nose, so be extra vigilant, ”the statement said.
