FINN Valley AC retained the McGonagle Champions Cup after an exciting day of cross country at Stranorlar on Sunday.

Finn Valley AC won the overall award after winning the team gold medal in Girls Under 9, Boys Under 9, Girls Under 10, Girls Under 11 , boys under 11, boys under 12, girls under 12, under 13 girls and boys under 15.

The McGonagle Cup was presented to Finn Valley AC captain Zara Alexander by experienced club coach Peadar McGranaghan.

The annual Cross Country Champions Cup event was making a comeback after Covid after being absent from the calendar in 2020. It was the fourth edition of what has become a popular outing for clubs at dawn. of the cross-country season.

Among those in attendance was Pierce O’Callaghan, the new head of competition management at World Athletics, who praised the organization and operation of the day.

The Under-17 boys’ race produced an emotional final with Ben Warnock of Monaghan replacing Louis Cole of City of Derry Spartans.

Spartan athlete Hannah Wade gave one of the performances of the day to win the women’s Under-17 race.

Cranford AC has been successful in both Under-15 races, impressively won by Caolan McFadden and Miah Fletcher.

Finn Valley AC’s Rhia Toner was an eye-catching winner in the Girls Under 9 race while Shea Irwin followed up with gold in the Boys Under 9 race.

Letterkenny AC’s Dara Maguire edged Foyle Valley’s Niall Callan for the line in the boys’ under-10 race

Killybegs AC was making a comeback in cross country competition and Mia-Rose Boyle won gold in the Under-10 race, beating tough Jasmine Barrett-Doherty.

Killybegs won team silver in the boys under 9, bronze in the girls under 10 and in the boys under 10.

A splendid Finn Valley AC team won the Under-12 race in style with Niamh McGlinchey, Aoibhin McElhinney and Amy McElchar, making it a double for the host club, ably seconded by Andrea Reid in sixth place.

Just under 400 athletes, from clubs in seven counties, participated in the event, which followed a week-long elementary and high school cross country action in Finn Valley AC with approximately 1,300 athletes having participated last week.
