Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football takes big step in rival recruiting rankings 2022

Notre Dame secured an entry from Mission Hills, Calif. Linebacker Bishop Alemany Niuafe Tuihalamaka on Saturday, and with his entry the Irish took a big step up in the Rivals 2022 standings.

After Pittsburgh Central Catholic defensive tackle Donovan Hinish signed to the Irish on June 4, Notre Dame had the No. 4 recruiting class in the country. The combination of Tuihalamaka’s commitment to Notre Dame and both LSU and Georgia, who had No. 2 and 3 classes respectively, having multiple clearances, catapulted the Irish into the country’s No. 2 class.

Tuihalamaka’s commitment gave Notre Dame 144 points for its class total of 1,650. LSU is just 57 points behind the Irish in third place. Ohio State has 13 entries in its 2022 category – two fewer than Notre Dame – and is 449 points ahead of the Irish.

Ohio State hired four five-star prospects, which carries a lot of weight, while the Irish don’t have five-star commitments.

Fifteen verbal pledges for Notre Dame are the largest in the country among the Power Five programs. It will be difficult for Notre Dame to stay in the top five, as a school like Alabama only has seven entries at this point in the cycle but is expected to finish in the top five, as is usually the case. Other top programs will continue to add more commitments, which will also improve their rankings. Only time will tell if the Irish can reach a top-five class.

Notre Dame’s average star rating of 3.73 is solid, but he will need to continue to hit top and top-ranked goals to stay in the top five.

Rivals ranks Tuihalamaka as a four-star talent, the No. 10 prospect in California and the No. 5 inside linebacker and No. 144 player in the country.

Stats are not available for his shortened spring season in 2021, but Tuihalamaka recorded 65 tackles, seven tackles for a loss and eight quarterbacks in a sophomore year in 2019.

He is Notre Dame’s third linebacker engagement in the cycle, joining Michigan rookies Joshua Burnham and Nolan ziegler.

All three are listed as four star rookies by Rivals. Notre Dame has 15 commitments in the 2022 class.

Casey clausen – the older brother of the former Irish quarterback Jimmy clausen – is Head Coach Bishop Alemany, Tuihalamaka High School.
