Cost of living crisis: 25 food banks operating across Northern Ireland


At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, almost a fifth of the population, including more than 100,000 children, lived below the poverty line.

There is no denying that the recent spike in food and fuel prices has had a detrimental effect on those who are already struggling, and the fact that one in 14 households does not have access to a sufficiently varied diet for a mode healthy living, the importance of food banks in helping the most disadvantaged families and individuals has never been greater.

Recent research from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation has identified that households will typically need to spend between 24% and 46% of their income on a food basket that contains only the minimum of healthy essential foods.

In an attempt to end the turmoil, food banks in Northern Ireland are playing a pivotal role in trying to ease the food crisis, providing lifesaving items to those who need them most.
