Community “deeply shocked” as man dies after single car crash

Tributes were paid to a man who died after an accident near Kilcoo, County Down.

he collision with a vehicle occurred on Castlewellan Road in the early hours of Friday.

A passenger was taken to hospital but later died. The driver of the car was also admitted for treatment.

The deceased was locally named Jonathan Gribben.

The Clonduff GAC Facebook page said it was “deeply shocked and saddened by the untimely death of our former young player.”

He continued, “To his heartbroken parents Eamon and Majella, his beloved brother Declan, the whole family circle and his many friends, we send our deepest condolences.”

Police said they were investigating the crash and appealed for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to get in touch.

Sinn Fein advisor Cathy Mason sent condolences to the family of the deceased and said she hoped the injured person would make a full recovery.

“The local community was shocked and saddened by the death of a man in a car crash on Castlewellan Road near Kilcoo,” she said.

“Another person was also injured in the incident and I hope they will make a full recovery.

“My thoughts and sympathies are with the family, friends and loved ones of the deceased man.

PSNI said: “The vehicle collision involving a Mitsubishi Shogun occurred on Castlewellan Road.

“Officers attended the scene with colleagues from other emergency services.

“The passenger was taken to hospital by the Northern Ireland ambulance service, but has sadly died since.

“The driver was taken to hospital to treat his injuries.

“Please contact us on 101, citing reference 23 on 01/10/21.”
