‘Coffee with a Cop’ brings West Springfield police closer to the community

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Local residents were able to gather and share coffee with local law enforcement at Tandem Bagel on Saturday.

“Coffee with a Cop” aimed to foster a positive relationship with local law enforcement. People gather over a cup of coffee to get to know members of the West Springfield Police Department better.

Erica Ireland of the West Springfield Police Department told 22News: “It’s an easy way for my police to get out and you know here are the issues that some citizens might have and we can interact with community members that we might not always get to see everyday.

West Springfield Mayor Will Rechielt also came out to show his support.

“Put a face to officers and badges. I think it’s really important for the police to know they’re appreciated here in West Springfield, and for the community to know who’s doing the job. He’s a neighbor, he’s a friend, he’s a teammate. I think it’s important on both sides,” he said.

Officers distributed stickers, child safety kits, coloring books and more in an effort to bond with members of their local community.
