Warren Gatland on Alun Wyn Jones’ possible return to Lions
Follow the reaction live after the British and Irish Lions beat the Stormers in the Tourists’ final warm-up ahead of the Test Series.
Scrum-half Ali Price impressed as the visitors scored seven tries in a comfortable 49-3 win on Saturday. It was another slow start for the Lions in the first 20 minutes, but once they found their rhythm they were far too strong for the hosts, who struggled with the tourists’ impenetrable defensive wall and their ball. fast to failure.
Price allowed them to play with that high pace in the opening hour and he now has to put pressure on Tour captain Conor Murray for a starting spot in the first test against world champion Springboks at the same venue on the weekend. -end next.
Loose forward Hamish Watson was an aggressive runner with the ball in hand, as was excellent hooker Luke Cowan-Dickie, while another good news for coach Warren Gatland was the return of lock Alun Wyn Jones who has had 30 minutes under his belt after dislocating his shoulder three weeks ago. Lions vs Stormers result: Gatland on the challenges South Africa will pose
âWe expect a lot of riders out of nine so we have to match the physique of the Springboks. This is an area we need to work on. We expect a lot of kicking in the game. With a lot of teams you might have 20 odd kicks in the game and with the Springboks it goes up to 40 odd so we’re going to have to do a lot of work on that this week, being prepared to stay in that arm. -Wrestle.
âOur defense has continued to improve. We haven’t yet conceded a pick-and-go test on this tour, which is one of the strengths of South African rugby, so I’m happy with that.

Lions vs Stormers result: Warren Gatland in selection
âI don’t come into the tour with preconceived ideas. I let the media and other rugby experts do that. They’re all very different from each other, so I’m trying not to go into that with thoughts about the players. I like that it develops and that the players have the opportunity to raise their hands. Sometimes it’s about looking at the stats or getting a feel for certain players or combinations.
On the scrum-halfs: âAli did well. Gareth didn’t perform as well as he would have liked last week, but he was good coming off the bench. We had a few box kicks that went a bit too far but when Ali started to run a bit he put pressure on them. I am really happy with his performance.
On Robbie Henshaw: âI think it was obvious he needed to run. There were a few things in his game that he will be looking at and I think he will be better at it. He needed the game, he was orderly without being brilliant, but I was happy with the way we defended as a team and he was instrumental in organizing that midfield defense and our team is also short. We defended exceptionally well.

Lions vs Stormers result: reaction from Warren Gatland
âI started to remember a few names and think of combinations. We’re going to watch the game and talk to the medics, but from a fitness standpoint we’re pretty good. We will be going through this process in the next 48, 72 hours. There will be a lively debate, I guess.
On Alun Wyn Jones: âHe defended well and put in some shots. The important thing for him was to go through this period and see how he was afterwards. I know how hard he has worked over the past year. He felt in 2017 that he was not quite at his best. . He loves playing for the Lions and desperately wanted to come back. For me, it shows how much it means to players from these four nations.
âWe will have this discussion to see if there is a role for him as a starter or on the bench next week. We know we have a big week ahead of us.
Gatland confirms Jones has returned to the role of tour captain, with Conor Murray more than happy to cede that responsibility, apparently.

Lions vs Stormers: reaction from Warren Gatland
âThe Stormers came out and really attacked us. We had to weather a storm. This is what you would expect from a Lions tour. I was glad we got back to it. There were very good performances. Luke Cowan-Dickie was good, there were good things in the back. I was really happy with the impact on the bench, they kept the pressure on.
The longer the match went on, the better Marcus Smith looked, the more comfortable he looked. He kicked well and had nice touches. For a guy who really only had one workout, he was good. It will be part of the discussions [for selection for the first Test]. “
Gatland suggests the back row and full three are the two areas that will give him the most headaches this week. “It’s important to consider the impact the bench is going to have and make sure they can add impact.”

Lions vs Stormers result: Marcus Smith impresses
It’s probably too late for Marcus Smith to make his way into the 23 for next Saturday’s game opener, but the opener showed why the Lions are so keen to get him into the squad with Finn Russell struggling with a wound. It took a little while to adjust to the contest, but he showed imagination, confidence and offensive verve to dazzle as the game opened. He would definitely be an X-Factor option off the bench – you wouldn’t rule him out at some point in the next three weeks if Russell isn’t able to get involved.
Warren Gatland should be happy to see Alun Wyn Jones back on the scene. Five carries and seven tackles for the lockdown in 26 minutes on the pitch to prove his fitness. While Gatland is happy with his preparation for the game, which is usually never a problem for the 35-year-old, he is the favorite to take over as captain at Cape Town Stadium next week.
We should hear from Gatland soon, so stay with us for his reaction to his team’s victory.

Lions vs Stormers result: Luke Cowan-Dickie named player of the match
Talk to Air sports, the Exeter hooker said: âThere are small areas where we can improve. The last few games we’ve kept him in the peloton with driving, tap and go, pick and go mauls just to see where we’re at.
âI think we wanted a faster start. It’s hard to come back when you fall early in the game. Again tonight, it wasn’t the fastest start but we defended better. By the time of the test, I think we’ll be good.
âAt the end of the day, everyone wants to win. If I don’t do the best 23, as long as we go there and win, I’d be happy.

Lions Test Selection: Price and Cowan-Dickie impress
Very few in a Lions jersey have had a bad game, but you’d say it would now be a real surprise if Luke Cowan-Dickie and Ali Price weren’t on the starting squad in Cape Town next weekend. Two very impressive performances.
A first blow against a starting XV on the back today? W. Jones, Cowan-Dickie, Furlong, Itoje, AW. Jones, Beirne, Curry, Faletau; Price, Biggar; Henshaw, Harris; Adams, Watson, L. Williams.

Lions beat Stormers: hosts beaten comfortably
230 points in four games against the South African Lions clubs. Considering the relative weakness of South African national rugby at present and the larger group involved with the Springboks, this is to be expected, but it is still striking how far Warren Gatland’s party has been. tested during concerted periods during these four meetings.
The Stormers probably put together the best half hour of one of the three teams to meet the Lions, but also encountered the most organized defense. You’d say three points is a meager reward for a number of promising moments on offense. John Dobson’s side were a bit libertine in the red zone, however, and the impact the Lions held in reserve was still likely to be revealing in the final quarter.

Lions beat Stormers: Stuart Hogg reacts to Sky Sports
On the performance: âI think we are in a good position. Sometimes it was a bit disjointed and a bit loose. We had to go out and express ourselves. We’re talking about the fact that great memories are built on the backs of great opportunities. Thanks to the boys – we did a great job.
On the selection of tests: âI’m just here to do my job. If I get the chance next week it will be great, but I will support the boys if I don’t.
